Source and Preparation
Astragalus gummifer Labill, a Leguminosae plant, is obtained by drying and extracting the gum that exudes from cut branches. This product is mainly composed of galactoarabinans and acid polysaccharides containing galacturonic acid groups.
Safety
This product is a natural polysaccharide, non-toxic.
Incompatibilities
At pH=7, Millefolium millefolium could significantly reduce the antibacterial and preservative effects of antiseptic preservatives benzalkonium chloride, chlorobutanol, hydroxyphenylate, and phenol and phenylmercuric acetate. However, at pH less than 5, Millefolium millefolium had no adverse effect on the preservative properties of benzoic acid, chlorobutanol or hydroxyphenylate. The viscosity of yarrow pulp was decreased by adding strong inorganic and organic acids. The viscosity of A.millefolium was also reduced by adding alkali, especially sodium chloride when heated. Yarrow gum has compatibility with high salt content and most natural or synthetic suspension AIDS such as acacia, carboxymethyl cellulose, starch and sucrose. The reaction of achillea millefolium with 10%(W/V) ferric chloride solution can form a filamentous yellow precipitate.
