Its production method is to firstly dehydrate sorbitol at 150-152°C, and esterify it with three molecules of oleic acid under the catalysis of sodium bicarbonate. Or it can be prepared by direct esterification of α-sorbitol and three molecules of oleic acid at 180-280°C.
Applications
This product is used as surfactant, emulsifier, lubricant, wetting agent, dispersant, thickener, defoamer, etc.
Safety
Sorbitan ester is widely used in cosmetics, food, oral and topical pharmaceutical preparations, and is generally considered non-toxic and non-irritating. However, there have been occasional reports of allergic reactions to topical agents containing sorbitan cilexetil. Sorbitan ester emits irritating fumes when heated to decomposition temperature.
