Description
Powdered cellulose occurs as a white or almost white, odorless and tasteless powder of various particle sizes, ranging from a freeflowing fine or granular dense powder, to a coarse, fluffy, nonflowing material.

Stability and Storage Conditions
Powdered cellulose is a stable, slightly hygroscopic substance; it should be kept in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Capsule filler: 0~100%; tablet binder: 5%~25%; tablet disintegrant: 5%~15%; tablet glidant: 1%~2%.
Source and Preparation
The α-cellulose slurry obtained from fibrous plants is purified and mechanically reduced to obtain powdery cellulose.
Safety
Powdered cellulose is widely used in oral pharmaceutical preparations and food, and is a non-toxic and non-irritating substance. However, allergic reactions may occur when inhaled, ingested, or in contact with the skin. Powdered cellulose is not absorbed after oral administration and therefore has little toxicity. Cellulose used as a formulation excipient does not cause diarrhea, however, consumption of large amounts of cellulose may act as a laxative. Abuse of preparations containing cellulose by inhalation or injection can lead to the formation of fibrous granulomas.
