Stability and Storage Conditions
Calcium carboxymethyl cellulose is a stable substance despite its hygroscopicity. Store in a well-sealed container in a cool, dry place.
Source and Preparation
Cellulose obtained from wood pulp or cotton fibers is carboxymethylated and then converted into calcium salts. Graded and crushed according to the degree of carboxymethylation.
Applications
Calcium carboxymethyl cellulose is mainly used in tablets. As a binder, diluent and disintegrator. Although calcium carboxymethyl cellulose is insoluble in water, it is an effective tablet disintegrator because it expands to several times its original volume upon contact with water. For use in tablets, the maximum use concentration is 15% (w/w); Above this concentration, the hardness of the tablet decreases. Calcium carboxymethyl cellulose also has other uses similar to sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; For example, it is used as a suspension aid or tackifier in oral and topical pharmaceutical preparations.
