Several medicines are subject to oxidation, which are frequently accelerated by light, temperature, hydrogen ion concentration, presence of trace metals, or peroxides. Unfavorable taste or odor, discoloration or another change in appearance, precipitation, or even a little loss of activity are all signs that a product has undergone oxidation. Therefore, antioxidants are often introduced to extend the shelf life of pharmaceuticals along with suggested procedures to minimize oxidation.
Antioxidants are molecules (often specifically in living organisms) that slow or prevent oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that causes the transfer of electrons from a substance to an oxidant, during which free radicals can be generated, which in turn initiates a chain reaction. When a chain reaction occurs in a cell, the cell is damaged or apoptotic. Antioxidants remove free radicals, terminate the chain reaction and inhibit other oxidation reactions, while being oxidized themselves.
Antioxidants are used as medical excipients to help combat the deterioration of drugs. Antioxidants are a very important class of preservatives. Some of the preservatives with antioxidant effects include: L-(+)-Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, etc.
Ascorbic acid is a natural water-soluble vitamin (Vitamin C). Ascorbic acid is a potent reducing and antioxidant agent that performs multiple roles physiologically. It is found in citrus and other fruits, and in vegetable and cannot be produced or stored by humans and must be obtained in the diet. Ascorbic acid occurs as a white to light-yellow-colored, nonhygroscopic, odorless, crystalline powder or colorless crystals with a sharp, acidic taste.
Ascorbyl palmitate, also known as vitamin c-palmitate or asc-6-O-palmitate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as fatty acid esters. These are carboxylic ester derivatives of a fatty acid. Ascorbyl palmitate exists as a solid and is considered to be practically insoluble (in water) and relatively neutral.
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a phenolic antioxidant used as a food additive. It is frequently added to dried cereals, cooking oils and animal foods. BHT is also known to enhance the stability of Pharmaceuticals, fat-soluble vitamins and cosmetics. As antioxidant in Pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and oil& fat in food. Delay or prevent oxidative rancidity of oil and fat and loss of fat-soluble vitamins. Butylated hydroxytoluene can be used alone or in combination with synergists such as citric acid and phosphoric acid.
