Background

In membrane permeation controlled systems, the drug reservoir is completely encapsulated in a shallow compartment made of a metal-plastic laminate that is impermeable to the drug and molded with a rate-controlled polymer membrane (e.g., ethylene vinyl acetate with defined drug permeability). The drug is released only through the microporous or nonporous rate control membrane. In the drug reservoir, the drug solids are either dispersed in a solid polymer matrix or suspended in a viscous liquid medium, forming a paste-like suspension. A layer of drug-compatible, hypoallergenic adhesion polymer can be applied to the outer surface of the polymer membrane (rate control membrane) to achieve close contact between the transdermal system and the skin surface.
