The advantages of semi-solid casting technology to prepare oral thin film are that it does not require expensive equipment, simplifies the casting process, has fast solidification speed, is easy to process in batches, and has an accurate thickness and pleasing appearance.
The principle of semi-solid casting technology for oral thin film preparation is to prepare a solution of water-soluble film-forming polymer; the resulting solution is added to a solution of acid-insoluble polymer (e.g. cellulose acetate phthalate, cellulose acetate butyrate), which was prepared in ammonium or sodium hydroxide. Then, an appropriate amount of plasticizer is added to obtain a gel mass. Finally, heat-controlled drums cast the gel mass into the films or ribbons.

Results: This study used a semi-solid casting method to prepare mouth-dissolving film. Successful formulation of Cariprazine mouth-dissolving films may prevent first-pass metabolism to the most significant extent. The results show that it can be concluded that HPMC-K4M-based mouth-dissolving films of Cariprazine can be successfully prepared with considerable stability and improved bioavailability.
