The rolling method is a technique used to manufacture oral thin films. The process involves rolling a drug solution or suspension onto a carrier roller, drying the resulting film, and cutting it into the desired shapes and sizes. CD Formulation has many years of experience in rolling technology for oral thin film manufacturing, so we can quickly help customers solve possible problems with this technology and speed up the development of oral thin films.
In the rolling process, the premix is first prepared, the active ingredient is added, the solution or suspension containing the drug is rolled on a carrier, and the film is formed. Premix batch components fed to the master batch feed tank include film-forming polymer, polar solvent, and other additives besides API. Then, the master batch is supplied in a specified quantity using a metering pump and control valve. The necessary drug quantity is introduced to the mixer and mixed long enough to form a homogenized matrix. A precise amount of matrix is pumped into the pan via a second metering pump. The metering roll determines the thickness of the film. Finally, the film is created on the substrate and removed by the support roller.

The rolling technique involves rolling a drug solution or suspension onto a carrier roller, drying the resulting film, and then cutting it into the desired shapes and sizes. The workflow of rolling technology for oral thin film preparation is as follows:
Add the film-forming polymer, polar solvent, and other excipients to a feed tank, except for the active ingredient (API).
A high-shear processor dissolves the API and other components in a small amount of aqueous solvent, usually water or a water/alcohol mixture.
Thoroughly mix the drug and film-forming polymer solutions, then feed the solution with the intended dose to the roller using a controlled valve pump. The solution should have specific rheological considerations.
Dry the film on rollers.
Cut the film into the desired shapes and sizes.

Results: A solution or suspension containing drugs is rolled on a carrier using the rolling method. The solvent is mainly water and a mixture of water and alcohol. The film is dried on the rollers and cut into desired shapes and sizes. Other ingredients, including active agents, are dissolved in a small portion of aqueous solvent using a shear processor. Water soluble hydrocolloids dissolved in water to form a homogenous viscous solution.
