Peptides are short polymers composed of about 20 ~ 50 amino acids, and protein is a macromolecular and high molecular weight polypeptide composed of more than 50 long-chain amino acids arranged into linear chains by peptide bonds. The structural stability of proteins or peptides is a major factor in biological activity; therefore, physical and chemical stability must be guaranteed. Our team found that adding excipients such as polymers and sugars used to fabricate oral thin films can confer stability to protein/peptide.

Results: In this study, the author prepared protein-loaded orodispersible films (ODFs) based on blends of trehalose/pullulan by air- and freeze-drying. ODFs were loaded with three model proteins. Trehalose/pullulan-based ODFs are from a technical point promising for possible protein delivery via the oral cavity.
