Shear testing can accurately assess the stability and performance of a patch when subjected to shear forces. This is critical for understanding the adhesion and persistence of the patch in real-world applications, helping with product design, manufacturing, and use. CD Formulation offers professional transdermal formulation shear testing services.
The shear test of the transdermal patch mainly measures the maximum stress value that the interface of the patch can withstand when it is subjected to shear force. This shear force generally refers to the force exerted along the direction of the interface between the patch and the object to which it is adhered and is used to evaluate the adhesive performance and stability of the patch when subjected to such forces. The results of the shear test are usually expressed in terms of shear strength. The larger the value, the better the adhesive performance and stability of the patch.
The following is our process for shear testing:

1. Prepare the sample: Apply the patch evenly to the chosen substrate, making sure the surface is clean and flat, and wait for the patch to dry completely. Samples are cut into standard sizes, usually strips or squares, for testing.
2. Securing the sample : One end is secured to the test equipment, usually by clamping the substrate in a clamp, ensuring that the sample is stable.
3. Applying shear force: Shear force is applied through the test equipment, usually at a certain speed or with a certain force to shear the patch. This can be unidirectional shear or reciprocating shear, depending on the specific test requirements.
4. Duration: The duration of the patch under applied shear force is recorded and is usually tested over a set period of time to assess its long-lasting performance.
5. Data analysis: According to the output data of the testing equipment, the changes in shear force and time during the shearing process can be analyzed to obtain the relationship curve between shear stress and time.
We commonly use the following methods to evaluate patch shear:
Technology | Description |
Single lap tensile shear strength test | With this method, the performance of the patch under tensile shear force can be measured. |
Compressive shear strength test | This method evaluates the performance of a patch by applying compressive shear force. |
Shear testing is one of the important aspects of transdermal patch quality control. By testing shear stress on patches from different batches and production lines, we can ensure product consistency and stability and avoid quality issues.
