Results:

The authors investigated the versatility of a transgenic alga (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) as a recombinant protein production platform. Seven different recombinant genes were selected to test the system, and four of the seven tested were successfully produced. Three of the proteins were expressed at levels between 2% and 3% of total soluble protein. All four proteins produced were soluble and exhibited comparable biological activity to the same proteins expressed using traditional production platforms. This conclusion demonstrates the great potential of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii for the production of human therapeutic proteins.
