The rolling method is a technique for manufacturing oral thin films, that involves rolling a solution or suspension containing the drug onto a carrier. The solvent is usually water or a mixture of water and alcohol, and the film is then dried on the rollers and cut into the desired shapes and sizes. The dispersions are shaped into films using dies. As a leader in innovative drug development, CD Formulation has established a rolling technology platform to assist in the development and production of oral thin film drugs.

In the rolling process, film is created by first preparing the pre-mix, then adding the active ingredient, and then forming the film. The pre-mix batch is introduced to the main batch feed tank together with additional materials such as polar solvent, film-forming polymer and API. The first metering pump and control valve then feed a predefined amount of the masterbatch. Once the mixer is filled with the proper amount of medication, it is combined long enough to create a homogenized matrix. The second metering pump feeds a certain amount of matrix into the pan. The film thickness is measured by the metering roller. At last, the film is produced on the substrate and removed by the support roller.

Results: In rolling method, a solution or suspension containing drug is rolled on a carrier. The solvent is mainly water and mixture of water and alcohol. The film is dried on the rollers and cut in to desired shapes and sizes. Other ingredients including active agent are dissolved in small portion of aqueous solvent using high shear processor. Water soluble hydrocolloids dissolved in water to form homogenous viscous solution.
