Thickness testing is a key quality control index for the consistency and effectiveness of oral thin film products. Through thickness testing, the content of active ingredients can be effectively evaluated, which has important guiding significance for accurate clinical medication, product performance, and patient safety. CD Formulation provides a variety of oral thin film thickness testing methods to meet different types of film thickness testing needs.
The thickness of oral thin films impacts content, drug release, solubility, patient acceptance, etc.

Our oral film thickness testing procedure generally includes the following steps:
For the detection of the thickness of the oral thin film, in order to ensure the accuracy of the test results, we require the film to be complete and without creases. After receiving the sample from the customer, we first check the appearance of the film to ensure the accuracy of the test results.
Our oral thin film thickness testing is conducted by measuring film at a few different locations, such as measuring 1 central point and 4 corners, each point is tested three times to obtain the average value. We can also select test points according to customer requirements.
Our oral film thickness testing methods include direct measurement and indirect measurement, we select the appropriate testing method according to oral thin film type, requirements and budget.
Testing Instrument | Detailed Information |
Screw Gauge Micrometer | Screw gauge micrometer, also known as a micrometer screw gauge, is a more precise measuring tool than the vernier caliper, using it to measure the length can be accurate to 0.01mm, which is one of the methods we use to measure the thickness of oral thin film. |
Digital Caliper | The digital caliper (sometimes incorrectly called the digital vernier caliper) is a precision instrument that can be used to measure internal and external distances extremely accurately. |
Thickness Tester | Thickness tester is a high-precision mechanical contact method thickness tester, which can be used for thickness measurement of thin films, etc. This instrument conforms to standards for mechanical contact method. The pressure foot can be lifted and lowered automatically, which can minimize the errors caused by human operation. |
Electron Microscope Measurement | Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) are the main thickness measuring instruments of electron microscopy. We measure the thickness according to the scanning image of the cross-section of the film. |
Laser-Based Testing | Laser systems can be used to quickly and accurately measure the thickness of materials by analyzing the reflection or refraction of a laser beam. |

Results: In this study, the thickness of the film was measured using a digital vernier calliper with a least count of 0.01 mm at different spots of the film. The thickness was measured at three different spots of the film and average was taken and Standard Deviation was calculated. As all the formulations contain different amounts of polymers, hence the thickness gradually increases with the number of polymers. All the film formulations were found to have a thickness in the range of 0.05 mm to 0.15 mm.
