Tear resistance testing is the resistance that a film offers when some load or force is applied on the film specimen, it is an important evaluation for oral thin films to ensure durability and reliability during handling and use. CD Formulation provides oral thin film tear resistance testing services to ensure the strength and durability of your oral thin film drug delivery systems.
Tear resistance testing is an important aspect of quality control and product development for oral thin film products. As a leader in the oral dissolved film industry, we have professional oral thin film tear resistance testing instruments and industry standards. It is done by the Elmendorf tear test and the Thwing-Albert tearing test. Usually, the applied load is the low or minimal rate of 51mm/min, which is generally found near the start of tearing and is able to tear the film.

Tear Resistance Testing Instruments | Detailed Information |
Elmendorf Tear Thwing Albert | Elmendorf tear testers are commonly used for testing the tear strength of flexible materials, including oral thin films, which measure the force required to propagate a tear in the film. |
Film Tensile Testers | Film tensile testers are designed specifically for testing the mechanical properties of thin films, including tear resistance. These testers can apply tension to the film until it tears, allowing for accurate measurement of tear strength. |
Graves Tear Testers | Graves tear testers can also be used for tear resistance testing of oral thin films, which apply controlled forces to create tears in the film, allowing for accurate measurement of tear strength. |
Universal Testing Machines (UTMs) | UTMs can be adapted for tear resistance testing of oral thin films by applying tension forces to the film until it tears, which can provide comprehensive data on the mechanical properties of the film, including tear strength. |
Texture Analyzers | Texture analyzers are versatile instruments that can be equipped with specific fixtures and probes to measure the tear resistance of oral thin films, which can apply controlled forces to the film to simulate tearing and provide precise data on tear strength. |

Results: In oral thin film study, tear resistance of plastic film or sheeting is a complex function of its ultimate resistance to rupture. Basically, a very low rate of loading 51 mm (2 in)/min is employed and is designed to measure the force to initiate tearing. The maximum stress or force (that is generally found near the onset of tearing) required to tear the specimen is recorded as the tear resistance value in Newtons (or pounds-force).
