Transdermal gene therapy is an emerging method of gene therapy, that delivers therapeutic genes to target cells or tissues through the skin, it shows good application value in gene therapy, especially in skin diseases. CD Formulation engages in gene therapy research and provides comprehensive and reliable technical support to researchers, especially in transdermal gene therapy formulation development.
To select drugs suitable for transdermal delivery, consider their physicochemical properties, such as lipophilicity, molecular weight, etc., and design formulations to optimize the transdermal absorption of the drugs. In this part, we need to optimize the transdermal delivery vehicle, such as designing a liposome-based dual-drug delivery system or constructing composite nanoparticles, which are novel transdermal delivery vehicles that will show more potential for development.
Development of chemical enhancers or the use of external energy sources to improve drug penetration into the skin, such as microneedling technology. Microneedle technology can bypass the skin barrier for drug and gene delivery, which has the advantages of simplicity, safety, and painlessness, and can transfer large molecule drugs and genes with good reproducibility.
Including mixing of drugs and excipients, preparation of micro-needles, molding of patches, etc., to ensure the quality and efficacy of formulations.
Evaluate the quality of the formulation through in vitro release and transdermal absorption tests, and further evaluate the in vivo efficacy and safety through animal models.

Currently, transdermal gene therapy formulations have a wide range of applications, which can be used not only for skin cancer treatment, vaccination, and wound healing but also in other therapies for effective delivery of gene therapy.
Platforms & Technologies | Content Description |
---|---|
Soluble microneedle patch technology | We have developed a soluble microneedle patch, which realizes efficient editing of target genes in subcutaneous immune cells and keratinocytes by CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system through transdermal drug delivery and intracellular delivery strategies, and effectively improves the therapeutic efficacy of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. |
Small interfering RNA (siRNA) transdermal delivery technology | Our established siRNA transdermal technology platform has shown promising potential for treating dermatological applications. Our combination of lipid, polymer, peptide, and nanoparticle delivery systems can enhance siRNAs' transdermal and transfection properties. |
Transdermal drive technology | We utilize chemical penetration promoters, iontophoresis, ultrasound, microneedle arrays, and laser technology for transdermal gene therapy formulations. |

Published: 2022
Transdermal drug delivery is an emerging and attractive alternative to oral and subcutaneous drug delivery systems. With new developments in skin permeation technology, anticancer drugs ranging from hydrophilic macromolecules to lipophilic agents can be administered via the transdermal route for cancer treatment. This study discusses various approaches to enhance the transdermal delivery of drugs, including micro- and nanotechnology-based transdermal formulations such as chemotherapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, phototherapy, vaccines, and medical devices. It was found that transdermal drug delivery systems have proven potential to cure cancer. They increase the bioavailability of drugs through site-specific drug delivery and can reduce the side effects of anti-cancer drugs.
