Coated microneedles refer to the coated of a drug solution or a drug dispersion layer onto the surface of a solid microneedle, which results in a coated microneedle. The preparation of coated microneedles consists of 3 steps: preparation of solid microneedles, preparation of drug solution, and coated the drug on the microneedle surface. Since the antigen dose required to trigger an immune response is usually at the nanogram or microgram level, coated microneedles offer unique advantages for vaccination.

Different methods can be used in the process of attaching the drug to the microneedle. These methods include the following:
CD Formulation provides integrated services from drug development to drug delivery, which can help our clients better develop their drug products. Our coated microneedle technology is well suited to coat a wide variety of active substances, including small molecules, peptides, proteins, deoxyribonucleic acids and viruses, onto microneedles for delivery to different tissues and organs. Here, we provide optimized services and testing services for the steps involved in coated microneedle technology.
1. Coated Excipient Solutions
CD Formulation provides coated excipient options for pharmaceutical customers in screening the appropriate delivery method for their drugs. The coated excipients we select for our clients are consistent with the drug's properties and need to meet the requirements of good biocompatibility, solid state at room temperature and minimal use.
2. In Vitro Characterization and Strength Testing of Coated Microneedles
In Vitro Characterization
Provides data on the homogeneity of the coated, the "effectiveness" of the drug and the efficiency of delivery for evaluation of microneedles.
Strength Testing
Provides physical parameters of microneedles, including: microneedle viscosity, microneedle strength, microneedle bending resistance evaluation, microneedle substrate hardness, microneedle molding quality and reliability verification, microneedle inter-slice consistency, and microneedle inter-face consistency.
The types of drug delivery that can be performed by coated microneedles include:
Fluorescein, calcein, vitamin B, trichothecene, insulin, desmopressin, parathyroid hormone, bovine pancreatic ribonuclease, ovalbumin, bovine serum albumin, horseradish peroxidase, antisense oligonucleotides, herpes simplex virus, West Nile virus, luciferase plasmid DNA, vaccines, salmon calcitonin, epinephrine, mepacaine, interfering ribonucleic acid, recombinant human growth hormone, paclitaxel, anticancer drugs, interferon, etc.
